Artist Statement

I have been an artist for over 40 years, and so it seemed appropriate to have “A Retrospective” exhibition to showcase my paintings. In 1980, I immigrated with my family to British Columbia, Canada from Lake Tahoe, California. We had purchased the historic Flying U Ranch, and planned to restore the vintage log buildings, while managing the guest and cattle business. During the long winter months, Sally and I would drive over to Margaret Callaghan’s house across the lake and spend the day painting and sketching. This is where I had my first introduction to painting in Watercolor and learned about the local FCA group of artists in 100 Mile House.

I started off in 1985 with lessons in drawing and composition with local FCA artist, Nita Flick. During that same time period, I began my Watercolor instruction with local FCA artist, Marvin Poole. Throughout the years, I have taken over 80+ art workshops with many talented instructors. The instruction and demonstrations gave me the confidence to work in a variety of mediums; Watercolor, Acrylic, Oil, Pastel, and Encaustic.

I am a professional Watercolor artist, and I received my elected Signature status membership with the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor in 2001. My paintings have been accepted into numerous juried art exhibitions since 1987. I find that painting with transparent Watercolor allows me the greatest freedom to create a luminous glow in my paintings. I specialize in the Watercolor medium, with an emphasis on creating paintings that are imbued with vibrant color, strong lights and darks, and are grounded in the principles of solid design.

My latest work, during the last 7 years, is in Collage with Mixed Media. I enjoy working in Collage because it’s intriguing to work with many different forms of paper, laser images, maps, vintage newsprint, handwritten notes and photos. I enjoy the process of designing abstract patterns out of cut paper shapes using multiple layers to achieve color, depth and texture. Lately I’ve begun to make my own hand painted gelli monoprints to use in my paintings to create a uniquely personal style. My goal as a visual artist is to make images that interest and inspire me, because the process of creating art is its own reward.
